The public joy with which Mary Tudor, England’s first ruling queen, was crowned soon sours as religion splits the country. Then her new husband, Philip of Spain, makes it painfully clear that he cares nothing for her. Lonely and depressed, she begins to vent her anguish on her people and England becomes a place of persecution and terror.
